What happens when two exceptionally talented people work together for a movie? An exceptionally brilliant cinema? Wrong, a cinema aiming to be exceptionally brilliant. Examples are Rockstar and now Barfi, only Barfi is higher on exceptional scale. Barfi only falls flat on narration which tends to become confusing for normal audience but definitely an Oscar worthy, if it ever gets sent.
Anurag Basu had a very confusing career graph and it reaches it's peak now. A movie dealing with love story of a normal person, a deaf and mute person and an autistic person with no melodrama is in no way a small feat. Anurag had handled the subject brilliantly but if he had made the narration only a bit simplified and a bit faster. I understand the straight narration would spoil the suspense but this type of narration though maintains the suspense, loses the focus here and there. Overall a commendable attempt and in the end a good original Indian cinema.
Second exceptionally talented one is Ranbir. He is exceeding his own benchmark each time. Wake up Sid, Rocket Singh and Rockstar are past now. Barfi is the new benchmark. A zero time over the board acting with zero melodrama but still captivating the audience is sheer magic and Ranbir is that perfect magician. His role as Barfi is adorable, sweet, uniquely played out and maintains that hint of a smile on your face through out while watching him. Is he The One yet? My bets are already on him.
Priyanka was good at times and normal rest. It was not a thoroughly etched role and comes more like a guest role here and there. She did her part well but in the scenes she was present, you appreciate the director's talent than her acting. Coming to Ileana, it is a welcome change to see a Telugu actress(not south actress) get a meaty role in Hindi rather than being an eye candy. Ileana did her part very well. It was so well that it is better than any of her Telugu roles. On a lighter note, if Bollywood is going crazy over Ileana already, I cannot imagine how much more crazier they will go if they see "The Ileana".
Overall, a cinema that aimed to be exceptionally brilliant but fell short by few inches and ended up being a brilliant cinema nevertheless.
