Whenever you watch a sequel you would try to recollect the story of its predecessor. But for Rock On 2, I tried to recollect how it made me feel. Rock on was a simple story. It was a gloomy movie talking about positive things like hope, friendship, love and most importantly music. And I assumed Rock on 2 would recreate the same.
So when the movie starts with voice over by KD with philosophy on fate sprinkled all over, it feels very nostalgic. Unlike first part, this one clearly states that they are going to reunite at some point through KD's narration. Intermittent flashbacks too work in it's favor. I did not foresee the interval twist and it was a real shock. The way the three leads acted and the scene conceived without much melodrama needs to be commended. It hits all the right chords until then but what follows after that is all down the hill. The intentions were right but narration was flawed. The makers could not strike the right balance between Rock on genre and how music can real world problems. It looked like a possible task at the very outset but the execution ruins it all. It seems to come back on track in the ending reels with Hoi Kiw song. But the songs that follow ruin it again. They just could not live up to the standard of Tom ho to of Rock on. That is one of the major drawbacks of the movie, its music. Except Hoi Kiw, Jaago and Manzar Naya songs, none of them register, which is totally unlike Rock on where all the songs hit the right note and chord when you watch the movie.
Coming to acting, no Farhan was not bad like some reviews claimed. He was alright in an easy role. Purab was okay too. But Arjun Rampal's role was not written right. His character looks so mean in the beginning whereas he was feeling equally guilty of the whole thing. Between the three only KD moved on easily and Both Joe and Adi were burdened by the guilt. This was not established right. Coming to Shraddha, she needs to learn a trick or too from Alia who knows how to act in Humpty sharma ki dulhania type of movies and Highway type of movies and show some variation. Shraddha acts just like she acted in Bhaagi in Rock on and that ruins the mood a bit. I like her and want her to improve. Her singing was flawless and unbelievably good in some places though.
So, the inept writing in second half and weak music spoil the "Magik" this time. I surely want a third part to this because the makers seemed serious about the franchise and did not come across as cashing in on the success but they need abler hands to handle this franchise.
