Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Idris Elba is...

Student of the year - Review

Student of the year should be termed as a Karan Johar's film inspired heavily by contemporary Bollywood cinema but surprisingly no review I had seen does that. Story starting off with phone calls and everyone meeting at hospital is straight out of the classic "Dil Chahta hai". Throughout the movie everyone refers to Abhi as some mysterious person like Rancho in 3 Idiots. The ending shot freezing on the heroes running is still fresh in memories from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. And Alia's role is straight out of K3G. But what Karan did not realize is there is no need for another Dil Chahta hai or 3 Idiots or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara that too with new comers. A movie with new comers should either be fresh on content or heavy on emotion or less in expectations. This is none of those. Being a Karan Johar movie this is heavy on expectations but there is not enough meat in the script for the youngsters to carry on the movie. Surprisingly this one is also very very low on melodrama as per Karan Johar standards. Even romance is lacking in his standards. If at all this movie does any good for anyone, it is for Sidharth. He is the perfect poster boy who also did a good job in his first movie. None of the new comers seem to be exceptional dancers if Karan was planning on making SOTY a musical. The whole point of the SOTY competition and the final breakout from a student all sound so silly even though it is again an attempt to do what Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots did. Coming to Hollywood inspirations, at least the poster designs and love triangle idea seem to be lifted from Twilight. If dubbed into English, this could easily pass for a teen romance movie in Hollywood but not on par with classics like 10 things I hate about you or Step Up or Say Anything.

For Tamil and Telugu audience, this movie tries to achieve what Kadhal/Prema Desam and/or Happy Days did but falls short, way short.
