No review can stop a Chiru fan from watching this movie. So, Chiru fans, read beyond this at your own risk.
There is always a debate while remaking a movie whether to stick to the original or make changes to improve it and make it more salable. You can not find fault with either arguments. Sticking to the original, we get good movies like Dhruva and by improving it we have seen movies like Tagore.
So Khaidi No 150, a remake of tamil Kathi, belongs to latter. But alas it was a great chance misused or shall I say mishandled. Movie starts off okay with some typical Vinayak style comedy almost bordering on repetitive and stale comedy. But by the interval time, the movie falls right into track and ends on an emotional high. The movie after interval looks so out of place with patchy screenplay, dragged at time and with very blasphemous placing of the songs.
Let's talk commercial elements. Chiru had to carry the movie on his shoulders and he did right justice to whatever was offered to him. He looked a bit out of shape but for his age and since this is his comeback, I shall cut him slack. Graphics in double action scenes are very third grade and look very rushed. Fights are pretty good especially the coin fight. Climax fight looks a little bit dragged. Songs are catchy audio-wise but picturization is strictly okay except "Ammadu" song but its placement is, as I already mentioned, blasphemous. Chiru's dance was good in Ammadu song. Rest of the songs it was a hit or a miss kind of choreography, more miss than hits. Yes, watch out for the shoe lace step, which is one of those fewer hit bits. The movie could have easily done without the comedy as there is nothing that leaves you in splits. It looks very routine, been there done that kind of Brahmanandam threads more on the lines of Krishna and Jalsa. Dialogues are a major drawback for the movie. They sound pretty outdated except the climax.
What really saves the movie is the brilliant basic plot. It is a very honest subject, if dealt with properly, could have done wonders like Tagore. But instead the movie ends up being a strictly average one for common audience. Overall, a missed and mishandled opportunity to tell a very sincere and a very contemporary issue.
