Biryani review

In Tamil if I have to name one director whose movie I wait for, then the first one to come to my mind is Venkat Prabhu. Of course I don't know that many directors in Tamil and besides Venkat Prabhu has always made good movies. I loved his Saroja, Chennai 600028, Mankatha and now Biryani but yet to watch Goa. Biryani, I like it, a bit more than Mankatha but lesser than Saroja and C28. His biggest asset is his sense of humor and his ability to inject humor into any type of situation. Saroja mainly worked for the reason that there was humor in the most tense filled scenes. Coming to Biryani, this is primarily a comedy or starts as one, then becomes a thriller, then for few scenes becomes a hero-centric movie, then touches sentiment and then comes back to thriller genre ending finally as comedy. So may be the title is well-intended then. :) Karthi and Premji chemistry was good in the movie. Hansika has a very small role and Mandy though a short role, leaves her mark. Rest all fall in place and there are quite a few guest appearances from director's friends. Songs are pretty good. Venkat Prabhu directs this movie as one among the audience. He gets the audience pulse right in few scenes like stopping Premji from uttering his famous dialogue or like making Karthi say that audience are waiting for the item song etc. The main problem of the movie is that just like this review, it wanders here and there before getting back to business especially in second half and it is not well-plotted thriller. Meaning it has some loopholes as in how police can close a case without knowing who paid the assassin or how they cannot know when exactly did a person die that too when the time frame is about few days long. Also even if they had not stopped for Biryani, the same sequence of events would have happened any ways and in that case it defeats the purpose of title. All said and done, it is a routine Venkat Prabhu film but not a routine film at any level. Watch it for a decent thriller experience.
