Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Side Effects - Review

Mixing genres is quite a common practice and the most commonly mixed genres are Comedy with thriller or Comedy with Romance or Romance with Tragedy or Comedy with Horror etc. But changing the genre of movie all of a sudden in the middle of the proceedings is a killer trick, if done properly, or shall I say, if done like this movie did. Movie starts off as realistic drama about medical field, prescriptions, drug side effects etc. But what uncovers in the last few reels of the movie are totally out of the blue and the makers tried to down play the gear shift so that the audience don't get detached from the proceedings but at the same time sit upright and get attentive about what happened till then. Until then I was wondering why Jude Law did a Contagion kind of role again. I don't want to reveal anything else and spoil it for you. Steven Soderbergh is slowly becoming a director to look out for, if only he is consistent. Watch it with patience and you will be awarded. But beware movie talks so much about depression and its symptoms that if you are not strong enough you might get depressed. So don't watch it alone or at least watch it till the end.
