Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Idris Elba is...

Nani's V - Movie Review

***No Spoiler Review***

Streaming: Amazon Prime

Nani's V is the first Telugu big ticket OTT release. It was a trend setter in that aspect and also had the chance of changing the course of Telugu Cinema. If only all the big names involved stuck to their guns and tried a different movie, it could have been a landmark film in Telugu OTT world.

Mohana Krishna Indraganti is an accomplished director, no doubt about it, but in making light hearted entertainers or romantic entertainers. Thriller genre is not definitely his strongest forte. I suspected that during Gentleman. But now it is confirmed. V with its trailer cut, bgm, gore and blood suggests that it is supposed to be a dark film. But director seemed very reluctant to dig deeper. For instance, "A pani chesina entertaining gaa cheyyaali anedhi naa policy". Correction: It should have been "A pani chesina entertaining gaa cheyyaali anedhi naa philosophy". I know it is nitpicking and it is easy to modify a dialogue than write a new one. But that small change could have given increased the relevance of the movie to the genre. Alas, it was lost.

Coming to actors, Nani is no doubt one of the best entertainers in Telugu cinema. And that is what he tries to do, entertain. He is very adorable, very entertaining, very charming and perfect gentleman as a psycho killer. Read that sentence again and if you are okay with it, then this movie is for you. But for hardcore Psychological Thriller fans, may be not. Few weeks back, thanks to Corona, I had a rewatch of Hindi movie Baaghi where Sudheer Babu played an antagonist. He was good in that. But in V he just one cute expression, be it scenes with Nivetha, or Press conference scenes or emotional scenes or confrontation scenes. I am not sure what exactly happened there. Nivetha, another powerhouse performer, tries her best to fit into a role that was supposed to give her a makeover but some very cheesy lines ruin it for her. For Aditi, it was a cake walk of a role, where she was supposed to look drop dead gorgeous and then towards the end, a damsel in distress.

Movie switches genres very haphazardly and that is gross injustice to all the genres. The first fight of the movie is a highlight. It is very well shot. Even the climax fight is but only if you are still emotionally invested in the movie by then. In my case, by then I just wanted to finish off another Nani movie and tick it off on my list. Camerawork, Art and editing are perfect if only it was supported by a script and direction suiting the genre. Another major turn off in the movie is stock stuff. Let me explain. Movie feels like it has stock music, stock acting, stock expressions, stock scenes, stock dialogues, stock ending etc. In other words, I missed originality. Look for Game of Thrones, Heat/Dhoom, Darr, Vikram Vedha and many more references.

In my personal opinion, V is a could have been but ended up as a could not be.
