Firstly I do not buy this changing the title to not hurt "manobhaavaalu" of some section. It is pure foolishness.
Now coming to the movie, Valmiki is Harish Shankar's attempt at taking a classy thriller and make into a commercial movie with elevations, punch dialogues and 80s villany. Harish totally fails as the story teller this time. Movie is so long, so boring and there are zero scenes where you will get emotionally connected with the characters.
Varun is decent in the role. He goes over board in few scenes but manages well in others. His extreme close up shots are very well utilized to capture his “chakkani” kallu but in the flashback episode he looks out of shape. So unless he wants to continue in roles like Gani, he need to work on that aspect. Atharva is zero value add for the movie. He looks good but does not get any charm or charisma added to the movie. I am a little confused if Mirnalini had any role or was she just used for eye candy. With Pooja Hegde I am totally sure that she was 100% eye candy material. She looks super hot even in the scenes with her family. Harish did not waste even a single second of her 15 mins role. And my friends if anyone is counting the pluses in the movie that might be the only one for those seeking some eye candy. And oh yeah the item song girl is hot too for 5 minutes.
Music is loud and by the time you walk out of the theater you will be having headache from Waka Waka Waka sound. But rest of the departments are spot on in the movie. The production values, the cinematography, the sets, the make up all form a perfect platform for the thriller but the inconsistent writing and lack of clarity in proceedings make all that go down the drain.
Lastly, there is a scene of Sukumar in which he makes fun of himself. He was so nice to accept the role but the director who makes a movie like Valmiki should learn to respect and admire that person than making a mockery of him.
In conclusion, Valmiki with any other name would still be a loud long bore fest that has one hot heroine and one super hot item song.
