I have stopped writing long reviews sometime back but today, be warned. This one is going to be a long one. You might not even think of this as a review but a torrential downpour of my emotions and feelings after watching the movie.
I stepped into the theater after reading so many reviewers praising the movie and some friends speaking high of this. So my expectations were obviously high. But I was expecting a movie on sibling relations. What I found instead was a peek into a normal family of mom, dad, two brothers and grand father with a wide range of problems.
First, there is the husband and wife relationship. Rajat Kapoor and Rathna Pathak portray their characters with so much perfection. The couple of dialogues between them following the impromptu family song and dance sequence are so beautifully written that you are bound to dig into the memories in your married life. That scene marks the beginning of showcasing the brilliance in writing and sensibility in directing and by the end they reach greater heights.
Then there is the troubled, on an edge kind of relationship between the brothers. Every family has sibling rivalry. Some during the childhood alone and some throughout life. But every guy who has a brother will definitely identify with Sidharth and Fawad. Fawad was perfect for the role and I should say Sidharth was good. Contrary to my expectations, this relationship is the least showcased in the movie when compared to others but it gets enough screen time to fall in love with this relationship all over again.
Moving onto the relationship between parents and the (in their opinion) lesser perfect son. I can write a book on how beautifully this was shown in the movie. You don't see such awesomeness in writing that often. The beauty of it is that it was conveyed with less dialogues and very subtle scenes. The scene where Fawad calls Sidharth step-brother (Sautela) is so cute and beautifully syncs up with his rapport with his parents.
Then there is a separate track of Alia. Boy oh boy! Are you in for a surprise or what!!! If you think she did a good job in Highway, you should wait until you see this movie. Her acting in funny scenes is authentically funny and equally authentic in emotional scenes. The scene on her birthday is where she proves what a brilliant actor she is. I had my eyes blurred with tears. A true slow clapping moment. Bravo Alia!!!
Last and not the least, actually the most awesomely showcased relationship in the movie is of the grandfather and his grandsons. If you have a grand father or ever had one, you will miss him and love him more after watching this. Rishi Kapoor did it with so much sincerity. The scene where he sends a video message to his grandsons will definitely make you talk to your grand dad if you still have one. I can say no movie ever dealt with this relationship in such a beautiful way.
By the time the movie ends, you feel bad to leave this family when they finally come to terms with their shortcomings and start cheering up. You get so attached to this dysfunctional family even though it is not all happy like Hum Apke Hain Kaun. May be because it looks so real.
Now I don't want to end this review using phrases like "In short" or "On a whole" etc. I can not sum this movie up in one sentence and don't even want to. Read this long boring downpour of my emotions or just trust me and go watch this movie.
