Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Thoonga Vanam

After trying a remake of crime thriller Papanasam, Kamal tries an original thriller and I should say Kamal brought down the standard of Tamil thriller movies. In the era of Gowtham Menons, Karthik Subbarajs, Vijay Sethupathys etc Thoonga vanam clearly falls much much behind. To begin with, the set up is straight lift of Nick of time. But what a beauty that movie was, a true classic. It literally keeps you on the edge of your seat, where as Thoonga Vanam is snail paced. That's a big no for a thriller unless you can direct it like Sriram Raghavan(Director of Badlapur and Johnny Gaddar in Hindi). The movie could have easily been cut short to be 1 hour long and then may be it would have been just okay. Now it is just a boring thriller. And coming to actors except the kid and to an extent Prakash Raj, everyone else looked disinterested in proceedings and very bored. And that includes Kamal Haasan too. So may be it is the affect of bad direction and lack of perfect screenplay on the actors. Post Uttama villain and Thoonga Vanam, I feel it's time for Kamal to step up his game and improve his story telling abilities(Thoonga vanam screenplay and Uttama Villain script both written by him).
