How can you explain magic? How can you explain romance? How can you explain emotion? All these need to be felt and experienced. Manam is a combination of these three elements. Movies like Notebook, Time Travelers wife, Serendipity and Lakehouse in Hollywood have some element of magic or fantasy in them beautifully interwoven with Romance. And Manam taps that domain in Telugu cinema successfully for the first time. A beautiful mix of Fantasy and Romance. And who better to experiment with romance than the Akkineni clan, the unprecedented kings of romance in Telugu cinema. The movie is a journey from pre-independence to current time with so many beautiful moments, funny moments, romantic moments and heartfelt moments. There is absolutely no melodrama or too much candyfloss romance or over the top comedy. Everything is so subtle and flows well with the movie. The flow of the movie is mesmerizing but a little slow.
Nagarjuna is the main pillar of the movie and he showed too much variations in his role for the first time. He won me over again with the scene where he first sees Samantha or his innocence just like a kid when he is with Samantha or his oozing levels of romance in scenes with Shriya. My second best goes to Samantha who just lived both the roles so effortlessly. Any bad acting on Nag or Samantha's part would have screwed up the whole movie. Shriya looked the best for the role and showed her talent in few scenes like the scene in which she meets Nag in mandapam. ANR just cake walked the role #TrueRespect to the legend he is . Chaitu still has a long way to go and he borders on the over acting zone when it comes to comedy and awkward zone when it comes to dances. Coming to the love stories Nag-Shriya were just beautifully magically romantically out of the world. Their love story gets the 100% marks. Chaitu-Samantha love story is more about the communication gaps and less about the sweet moments. It surely conveys the point well but romance is indeed missing except for few scenes. The different love story between Nag and Samantha is truly divine. I am just speechless and heart heavy even thinking about it. One has to watch the movie to understand that. Music is so well jelling with the movie that you hardly ever realize that there ever was one except for the last 2 minutes of the movie which has one of the most brilliant intros. A great experiment well handled by director and equally well supported by rest of the crew like music director, cameraman, art director, lyricists, dialogue writers and finally actors. The writers need to be appreciated for simplifying the concept so well for all sets of audience and yet not lose the magic or beauty of the movie. The direction of the movie is top notch. It feels as if you are living among the characters rather than watching them on screen.
In short this is a magical movie that tries to indulge you in the proceedings, makes you live through the gamut of emotions and then leaves you with a pleasant feeling towards the end of it. But it should have been a little bit more pacy in few places.
