Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Yes Alia looked great in the movie. Revathi was a pleasure to watch on big screen. Ronit Roy played his complex role very convincingly well. Amrita Singh truly lived her role. But does it make a good movie. Yes absolutely yes but only if it was 2 hours shorter. There is nothing new in the movie. There is love story, which is very superficial and feels more lust than romance. There are two families, one from Punjab and other from Chennai. Two beaten to death stereotypes in numerous Bollywood movies. There is pain in the movie when the parents don't agree. And then there is by now iconic SRK dialogue from DDLJ about not running away and getting married. Only new thing in the movie is Ronit Roy's role and he does that pretty well. Arjun Kapoor did well but let's just say that his physique needs a rather more talented costume designer to hide few pounds. Alia looked "beautiful" through out the movie except when she is in oddly designed saris. She also acted well. Songs reminded me of earlier Shankar Ehsaan Loy movies and they also seemed badly made. The director should have put more focus on tight screenplay or at least made this a documentary and called it "Journey from Love to marriage of Chetan Bhagat." I heard great reviews about the book. But the movie either completely missed the point or the book was also a hyped hit just like this movie.
