Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Idris Elba is

Master(Tamil) - Movie Review(No Spoilers)

It's been 10 months since Coronavirus caused the lockdowns all over the world. Humans have been deprived of going to movie theaters and having a hearty watch of a good movie. Many OTTs have come up with so much new age cinema to keep humans occupied. But there was one void that was lingering in the heart, mind and soul of every movie lover. They were missing a mass entertainer. Then came Pongal 2021 when Lokesh Kanagaraj, who earlier made a kickass mass movie Kaithi, directed Master was released. The fear of going to theaters still dominated the love of watching the movie in theaters. Then came the Master's OTT release. What followed next is pure ecstatic whirls of satisfaction.

Note: If you don't know who actor Joseph Vijay is, what is his filmography  and what are his biggest strengths, this movie may be a little less enjoyable for you.

The best thing about this movie writing wise is that there are no punch dialogues but there are plenty of punch packed whistle worthy moments. Kudos to the entire writing team that achieved this overcoming the temptation of writing for one of the biggest Tamil cinema's Mass hero. A commercial film maker tries to use the strengths of a mass hero to convey his or her story. In Master Lokesh used his story to pay homage to the stardom, antics and strengths of the actor plus the mass hero Vijay. Master is a 24 frames per second visual imagery of Vijay's filmography.

But the makers were smart enough to realize the basic definition of Mass, large number. The amount of cast in the movie in almost all the scenes. We mostly see Vijay shining in each scene but the kick we get in those scenes should also be credited to the large number of actors supporting that scene. Imagine "Vaathi coming" with may be 10 dancers, it would not have been so beautiful even though we would have enjoyed Vijay's dance equally. Same with Jail scenes, the more the people the bigger the impact of a mass hero seemed to be the perfectly used formula for this movie. No offense to Thalaivar fans and Karthik Subbaraj fans but now I realized that this is what Petta was missing, the huge canvas.

There was so much at stake here and so much expectation but Lokesh never even once blinked in his tight screenplay in telling a 3hr story. And another win in his kitty is zero cliches in the movie except the usual good wins over evil in the end. The subject of the movie is very new and not much explored in main stream cinema. Direction by Lokesh is brilliant. Cinematography is top class. Editing though looked a bit patchy in few scenes.

Vijay shines the highest in this entertainer that uses him to the full. We already know how good a dancer he is. So Lokesh and team give us a dance marathon. We all know his antics- one eyed winks, raising hands, weird but cute head shakes etc which most of the Tamil audience included in their normal body language. Lokesh and team made sure we watch the entire spectrum of those without ever overdoing it. We all know how Vijay can cry the best and make us cry too and Lokesh and team took care of it in just the right amount. And that "I am waiting" dialogue is surprise twist. You have to watch the movie to experience it. I burst out into laughter and started clapping for that scene. Sethupathy's role is written well. A Mahabharatian tone of a villian who is born out of his own personal tragedy, rising up to an epitome of evil and with a super power of Mahabharatian proportions. Sethupathy lives up to the role. The supporting cast are all apt. the kids too did a very good job. They are the main subjects of this entire script.

Lastly, Anirudh, take a bow. There is no Master without Anirudh. Movie was a hit even before the release, thanks to the chartbuster songs. But the bgm of the movie and how it gave the necessary elevations throughout is just a treat to watch. Thanks to Vidyasagar's Gilli bgm in one of the key scenes too.

All in all, Master is that new age Mass Entertainer that combines all of Vijay's filmography in one movie while dealing with a new point. A true tribute to Vijay's stardom done by Vijay and for Vijay fans and mass movie fans equally.
