Suicide Squad 2 - Movie Review

Streaming: HBOMAX Suicide Squad 1 was one of the finest DC movies(Minus Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy) to come out from their camp. Do not go by the reviews. It was so well received that Harley Quinn had her own movie. Now cut to Suicide Squad 2 with the famous James Gunn from Marvel camp at the helm, it barely meets the expectations.  Marvel made it seem so easy to write a super hero movie in super entertaining fashion with movies like Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnorak, Guardians of the Galaxy etc. But DC thought all they needed was the guy who directed Guardians to sell Suicide Squad. Oh my oh my how they were wrong. In one phrase, Suicide Squad is a gross mess that shines few times and far in between. Suicide Squad is no Guardians, not even close. The screenplay is messy. The visuals are gross but it aint Kill Bill. Kill Bill romanticizes with violence but Suicide Squad tries to romanticize with gross elements. To say the least, it doesn't work in favor of the movie. Idris Elba is

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Right from the first teaser release to the first three songs releases to the final theatrical trailer release, the makers of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil were clear that this was a cry fest. So if you go in with those expectations then you will be getting plenty of what you expect.

After seeing so many movies with a pair carelessly roaming the streets of foreign locations with no strings attached relationship, the first half of ADHM was a risk for Karan Johar. But he makes it worth with some new trendy stuff like silent dance concept, bar hopping etc and lets not the forget the filmy dialogues thrown in plenty all over the movie.

And before you could even realize you are suddenly thrown into a world of heartbreaks. What follows after that is one unending tugging at your heart strings. There are moments where tears just start dripping from your eyes while in some scenes you are smiling and crying at the same time and there are some moments where you just lie back in awe of the moment while tears are still rolling down your eyes. The usage of the song "Lag jaa gale" is one such moment.

ADHM's biggest drawback is it's length and an escapist twist towards the end. Karan uses that silly twist also to his full advantage to make his audience cry more. Music is a major highlight for the movie. Anushka was spot on and did pretty good. Fawad is either wasted in a not much of a role or he just could not fit into the role. Seeing Aishwarya(in a glamorous role) after long is a welcome change but her acting is still a big no. She seemed totally out of place in a role of a poet. Last and definitely not the least, actually the opposite of it, the best is Ranbir. After his Tamasha role, I feel only Imtiaz can write another tougher role for him but ADHM was not an easy one either. He was just brilliant. To name a few, watch out for his acting during phone conversation when Alizeh(Anushka's role) calls him to Lucknow or scene at the dinner table when she visits him for dinner. What more could we say about Ranbir that is already not said.

Overall, ADHM is very heartbreaking and mature movie on a one side love story that could have been a bit shorter, may be 15 minutes. Watch it for Ranbir and Anushka's brilliant acting, painful and soulful songs and good direction from Karan Johar. The below lines sum up the movie.

Mehfil mein teri,
Hum naa rahe jo
Gham toh nahi hai…
Gham toh nahi hai…
Qisse humare nazdeekiyon ke
Kam toh nahi hai…
Kitni dafaa, subah ko meri
Tere aangan me baithe maine sham kiya
Channa mereya mereya,
